PhD Studentships 2015

The Hasso-Plattner-Institute in Information and Communications Technology for Development, affiliated with the Department of Computer Science at the University of Cape Town, is offering Computer Science PhD studentships in the field of ICT for Development. Eligible candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a national of a Sub-Saharan African country (Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Comoros, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eretria, Ethiopia, Gambia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Sao Tome and Principe, Reunion, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe)
  2. Hold an MSc degree in Computer Science (with at least a Distinction; GPA = 3.7/4; Mention: Bien (14/20)…) and wish to enroll in fulltime study at the University of Cape Town
  3. Be proficient in English as attested by a TOEFL score of 550 - 600  or IELTS score of at least 6.5 

To apply for the studentships, please send us your CV, copies of academic transcripts, TOEFL/IELTS result, and a brief research proposal (2-3 pages) outlining the research question that you would like to tackle and how you would go about conducting the research. We will only consider Computer Science proposals within the ICT for Development field and the research should result in the production of a technology artefact such as software.
